Determining Online Marketing Budgets for 2007

Key Position Web Marketing, an Indianapolis-based online lead generation firm dedicated to manufacturing and engineering companies announced today a quick guide to determining online marketing budgets for the upcoming 2007 year.

According to Corey A. Wenger, President and CEO of Key Position, “The number one reason why an internet marketing initiative fails is because of lack of funding. Very few companies actually have a set amount of their yearly marketing budget for online marketing programs and campaigns.”

The amount a company should budget will depend on many factors including: sales and marketing objectives, level of competition, present market share, and many other determinants. Also, whether your business operates in niche vs. broad markets will dictate levels of funding needed to grow sales and sales leads.

Most companies use a certain percentage of gross sales to determine the annual marketing budget. As a rule of thumb, online marketing budgets should make up at least 10% of your annual budget. More aggressive companies will allot up to 35% of their marketing budget to online marketing efforts.

In a recent survey conducted by Key Position, 74% of manufacturers said they would be increasing their online marketing budgets within the next 12 months. This is a good indicator that internet marketing is growing in importance as a critical marketing tool towards generating and attracting new clients.
